NĚR MÁRĖSUEN* / pilot whale
“něr márėsuen“, s.m., pronounced [nɛ(ɪ̯)r märɐswɛ̃] 🔊, lit. black dolphin, is the Sarkese neology name for “pilot whale” or “long-finned pilot whale (Globicephala melas), a member of the wider dolphin family, which is, once again a frequent visitor to the waters of the Channel Islands.
origin: Sarkese neology / first recorded for Sarkese: 2023 (introduced) / current status in the 21st century: introduced
“něr márėsuen” is a compound name consisting of the main noun “márėsuen“, dolphin, which is masculine and variable, and the adjectival masculine form “něr“, which is variable too. We therefore say “un něr márėsuen, one/a pilot whale, but “deù ňér márėsuên”, two pilot whales, etc., with ‘něr’ changing to ‘ňér’ and ‘márėsuen’ to ‘márėsuên’ in plural. The pronunciation is regular, but see the respective SNDO entries “něr” and márėsuen“.
